If you haven’t made it to San Miguel (a beautiful colonial city in Mexico’s highlands) for the Day of the Dead party, lo siento… find your way here one day. Totally eccentric, eclectic, artistic (and potentially on the run) expats mixed with old Mexican tradition – can you say weird? Weird and fun and epic?! Be warned and well hydrated – this is more than a day! It appears there is a day dedicated to celebrating every dead person or thing… Here’s the warm up in el Jardin, first – get that face painted!

But if you’re lucky like Mrs. Jones and you pull a few strings, you can be painted in the home of a famous artist with badass musicians, and The Who’s who of the San Miguel expat community! These people are cool and accomplished and well educated and mostly way too much fun… Mrs. Jones has met her match? Here’s the professional artist advising the hombres as to the method of following the face structure… dedicated to achieving an anatomically perfect face paint! Huh? Pass the Don Julio 1970 and hand me a ninety dollar paint brush would ya?

While he had great guidance on his face paint situation, the ladies turned to the local pros! Que bien!!

Check out this mural painted by the host (the man is front and center)! And the lovely hostess in action (hard to catch this force of nature!). Muchas Gracias Will and Kyra for an amazing evening!

With everybody looking as colorfully dead as possible, it’s time to bring on the party!! Arriba, Arriba!!!

Apparently the next step in the procession is to brush up on our Spanish at the most epic Spanish language school in all of Mexico, Warren Hardy School of Spanish!! Turns out the best way to speak fluent Spanish is to mix in some tequila sampling… At least Mrs. Jones was beginning to feel fluent…

More about our epic Spanish language hosts in the San Miguel blog to follow… (if Mrs. Jones can shake off this hangover…)

Time to take it to the streets and see what this Muerto thing is all about! Bring your walking shoes, there’s a lot of ground to cover in this beautiful city!

Here’s a taste of the celebration where at every turn there is more magic to behold!

Marigolds abound on every doorway entry (with or without the flowers, the doors of San Miguel de Allende will blow you away!). These marigold are called the Flor de Muerto (flower of the dead) with their strong scent guiding souls home from the cemeteries. Cool beans!

The locals know how to celebrate their loved ones like no other culture! From the flowers to the baked goods and colorful costumes – Que hermoso!!

Mrs. Jones has lots more to share about this beautiful Mexican City filled with colorful people! Stay tuned… One shot of tequila and off we go!
